For this project, the task was to find any article either online or print and create a collage based on the topic or message the article was trying to convey. I came across a startling and sad article on the opioid crisis in the United States, specifically fentanyl. Over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl in the United States.
I picked the background layer to start as the article talked about how colorful and “candy-like” fentanyl appears. I added other images pertinent to the article on a separate layer such as the U.S. Border Patrol symbol, as the bulk of the fentanyl that ends up in the United States is smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border. Once the drugs are in the country law enforcement officials say that most of these pills are being sold through social media. I placed these images, then used select and mask to cut out the background. Lastly, I used blending modes and opacity to merge colors and patterns between my background and foreground layer to create a transparent effect. When I look at the final project, I feel I was effective in creating a collage with an important message.
