The project was to update the look and feel of an existing publication and showcase that new style in a 4-page, 2-spread magazine article. At the time of this project, the new Barbie movie had just been released and was all over the media. I found this article on adults buying ‘emotional support’ Barbie dolls entertaining.
I started the project by looking for Barbie images with emphasis on “Barbie Pink” The project involved using the 10 most important elements of magazine design: headline, introductory paragraph (kicker), body copy, bylines, sub-head, pull quotes, captions for images, section head, folio, and box copy.
It took a lot of rearranging the copy before I was pleased with the 3 column design for each page, excluding the title page. I like how I was able to use an actual Barbie doll box and mask out the white background and insert a pull quote from the article. After creating my rough draft of the project, I realized that the third page needed to have more flare. I put a high heel in the background and decreased the opacity so the copy was still legible. Overall, I think the new style was very eye appealing with an emphasis on a lot of “Barbie Pink”, but can you really ever have too much pink?
